Commercial Construction From Start to Finish

How to Work with Great Precision When Laying an Underwater Cable

If you have to raise and lower some specific items of equipment from one location to another, then you may be faced with a number of operational challenges. You've got to make sure that you can do the job efficiently by using the right equipment, but you've also got to ensure that everything is as safe as possible. This type of challenge can grow exponentially based on the location and the distances involved, but it can become even more challenging if the activity needs to take place underwater. What type of equipment do you need to focus on if your underwater winching operation is going to be successful?

Underwater Cabling

Sometimes, you may need to lay some cables between two particular locations that are separated by a significant body of water. For example, you may need to run some power across a sizeable lake to an island in the centre, so that you can build a home or other structure.

Precision Required

This type of operation will call for a lot of precision, as the cable will need to be placed on a part of the lakebed that is as protected as possible from all manner of risks. The cable itself will be under a lot of stress as it is introduced to the water and you will need to avoid the potential for damage at this stage of the operation as well. Consequently, you will need to use a winch that is carefully designed and that is able to deal with the constantly changing conditions on the surface.

Compensating for Movement

While you may not be in the middle of the open ocean here, you will nevertheless have to account for movements in the position of the boat, caused by waves and other actions. Your winching equipment will, therefore, need to be configured so that it can compensate for what is known as "active heave," or the movement of the vessel in relation to the lakebed below. This type of equipment will be able to filter out the movement so that the cable remains in a uniform position and can be accurately laid on the floor below.

Teamwork

To make sure that you are successful with your project, always work with contractors who fully understand the logistics involved and who will have access to the right type of winching equipment. This will ensure that you get power to your remote building as soon as possible and can get to work to build the structure.
