Commercial Construction From Start to Finish

3 Things You Need for Concrete Grinding Your Basement Floor

A project that many homeowners take on is converting their basement to a family room. This room could be a playroom for children, tv room, or lounge room for the adults. This conversion means preparing the basement floor for carpeting or flooring of some kind. That preparation generally means concrete grinding. This process grinds down the floor and polishes it to give you an even floor that is ready to take carpeting, vinyl, or epoxy depending on your plans. Here are three things you need if you plan on concrete grinding your basement floor.

Diamonds and Grits

The first thing you will need to do is make sure you have the right diamond and grit strength for your concrete floor. You may think that all concrete floors have the same strength and therefore need the same level of diamonds and grit. The diamonds and grit are used on the grinding machine to break through the concrete and smooth it out to a polish finish. If the diamonds and grit used are too high, they will break down the concrete too fast and cause damage. If they are too light of a grit, they won't grind the floor down like you need.

Power Source

You may think that concrete grinding is similar to floor buffing, with just a difference in the pads. For example, a floor buffer uses buffing pads to move dirt off the surface and polish the finish of the floor. A concrete grinder will use pads that have diamond chips and grit to grind the concrete and polish it smooth. The different is that a buffer can use a regular power source in your household. A concrete grinder will need a different power source that is more powerful than your normal electrical household output. You will need a power generator that gives more power than your household output for your concrete grinder. The amount of power you will need will depend on the size of the concrete grinder you have.

Vacuuming

One aspect of concrete grinding you may overlook is the vacuuming. You will need to vacuum the dust at the end of the project. This dust can especially be difficult to remove when it is in corners and along the baseboards of the wall. It makes it even more difficult when the dust is so fine and can easily escape into the air and resettle later. Make sure you have a powerful vacuum to remove and clean the area before you begin the carpeting or flooring work of your project.

There are other items you may need for your project. If you are ready to start your project, and purchase the supplies you need, visit your local hardware store. They can help with questions, pricing, and delivery options if needed. They can also help if you may need to find a local contractor to help with the project if it gets to much to handle as a DIY project.
